Beerud Sheth: Rebuilding Marketing Around the Conversation
Beerud Sheth: Rebuilding Marketing Around the Conversation
There is a particular kind of guest who does not need to reach for a framework because he has already lived through three of them. Beerud Sheth is one of those guests. He currently runs Gupshup AI, a conversational engagement platform used by over 50,000 businesses across more than 100 countries, and his central argument on this episode is that the entire architecture of marketing is being rebuilt around the conversation, whether most brands have noticed yet or not.

Background – education and career
Beerud's path to Gupshup runs through two earlier revolutions he helped shape rather than simply observed. Nearly 30 years ago, as a graduate student at MIT's Media Lab, he built one of the first autonomous agents for personalised news filtering, a little AI that learned a user's interests and built them a newspaper of one, years before "personalisation" became an industry buzzword.
He then founded Elance, the company that pioneered the gig economy long before remote work had a name, spending nearly two decades convincing the world that hiring a stranger over the internet was not, in fact, insane. Elance eventually became Upwork. Today, at Gupshup, those two threads, autonomous agents and patient trust-building at scale, converge with a third: messaging as the primary interface between brands and consumers.
3 key takeaways from the episode
The atomic unit of marketing is shifting from the click to the message. Beerud argues this isn't a matter of AI making existing marketing more efficient; it's a structural change that rewrites which metrics matter, how brands segment audiences, and what a brand's job even is.
Trust-based models take time to become obvious. Just as it took years for the world to accept hiring strangers over the internet through Elance, conversational commerce is following a similarly slow, then sudden, adoption curve.
Three decades of separate bets are now converging into one thesis. Autonomous agents from his MIT days, the patience required to scale a gig marketplace, and messaging infrastructure at Gupshup are not three different careers, they are three stages of the same underlying idea about how technology should mediate human decisions.
