Dr. Ashish Bajaj on Why Martech Is No Longer Optional

Dr. Ashish Bajaj is one of the few marketers in India who has run marketing at genuine scale across telecom, mobility, technology, and healthcare, which gives him an unusually wide view of what marketing technology can and cannot fix.

He was the Group Chief Marketing Officer at Narayana Health, where he led consumer-facing communication for one of India's largest healthcare networks. His expertise spans consumer understanding, media planning, and touchpoint optimisation, with a particular focus on connecting fragmented campaigns into a single, measurable growth system. He also explained about the 4 P’s of Martech.

Background – education and career

Ashish has held marketing leadership roles at Ola, Nokia, and Microsoft before moving into healthcare with Narayana Health. That path, from handset manufacturer to software giant to ride-hailing to hospitals, has given him a rare ability to translate martech principles across categories with very different customer journeys and buying cycles.

3 key takeaways from the episode

  1. Martech is infrastructure, not a tool purchase. Buying the platform is the easy part; the hard part is the data, the process, and the team behind it.

  2. Fragmented campaigns waste more budget than bad creative. Connecting the stack is usually a bigger lever than optimising any single channel.

  3. Healthcare marketing has lessons for every category. When trust and consideration cycles are long, brand and performance cannot be run as separate functions.

Books written or mentioned

Ashish is the author of The Martech Playbook, published by ZebraLearn, which is a nice thread connecting this episode to EP15 with ZebraLearn's founder. Very few books in this space offer such direct clarity. It moves beyond tool fatigue and gets to the core idea:

Martech is simply where marketing and technology meet, so we can stop guessing and start knowing.
