Anand Jain is co-founder and Chief Product Officer (also credited as Chief Strategy Officer) at CleverTap, the customer engagement and retention platform he started in 2013 alongside former Network18 colleagues Sunil Thomas and Suresh Kondamudi. Before CleverTap, Anand founded Burrp, one of India's early food-tech platforms, which was acquired by Infomedia18, and earlier in his career he worked on high-profile technology projects for Motorola and AT&T Wireless in the US. Outside of work, Anand is an avid trekker, drawn to the Sahyadri ranges around Mumbai and Pune and the trails of Uttarakhand.

His daily work focuses on building and evolving tools that help marketers understand user behavior, segment intelligently, and run automated, personalized journeys that increase customer lifetime value, now used by thousands of apps including major consumer brands. Anand is deeply involved in shaping how brands think about growth marketing and retention marketing together, advocating that mastering both is what truly drives "limitless CLV."

Background – education and career

Anand's background spans multiple ventures across product, analytics, and marketing, culminating in the co-founding of CleverTap. He brings a first-principles approach to problem-solving, emphasizing resilience and critical thinking in building products and strategies that respect customer context and preferences. Over his career, he has worked closely with marketers and product teams to bridge the gap between data, tech, and human behavior.

3 key takeaways from the episode

  1. The real unlock is CLV, not just acquisition. Anand explains that as marketing costs rise, brands that win are those who build robust retention engines powered by segmentation, journeys, and personalization, instead of endlessly chasing new users.

  2. AI-driven personalization reshapes retention. He shows how real-time data and behavioral understanding allow brands to move from generic campaigns to context-aware nudges that feel timely, relevant, and helpful.

  3. Resilience and first-principles thinking are core to building retention products. Anand stresses thinking from the customer's point of view, designing journeys that respect attention, preferences, and context, rather than just chasing metrics.
