Background – education and career
Souparno spent nearly nine years at TCS early in his career, followed by more than six years at Goldman Sachs, and time in consulting before crossing over into the startup world to build and scale micro-lending businesses. He is an alumnus of ISB, where he also now teaches, having built out a course on social media and retention marketing analytics over the past three years. He is the son of a banker who spent 32 years in the profession, which gives him a rare vantage point, having watched Indian banking change from both sides of the counter, as a customer and as an operator.
3 key takeaways from the episode
Banks aren't going anywhere, but the branch has to become an experience centre, not a transaction counter.
The next fintech wave is convergence, not consolidation: fewer apps, more coherence, and no single winner.
Every bank is sitting on data; the ones that win will be the ones that connect it.
Books written or mentioned
No specific book was cited in this episode, though Souparno's Indigo-versus-Emirates analogy and his framing of experience as "value delivered ÷ value committed", a measure he picked up from a workshop by Amin Haque, stood out as the most quotable frameworks of the conversation.
